Interagency Wilderness Stewardship for Practitioners
This five-day, 25-hour virtual course is offered by the interagency Arthur Carhart National Wilderness Training Center and meets agency wilderness training requirements for participants who attend all sessions.
To receive credit for the course, you must attend each day from 9:30AM – 3:30PM Mountain Time, September 20-24. A one-hour lunch break, as well as morning and afternoon breaks will be provided each day. Attendance will be taken throughout the week. Absence of more than 5% of the sessions will forfeit credit.

Mid-level and field-level decision-makers and key staff with wilderness stewardship responsibilities. This virtual course is designed to provide decision-makers the training as may be required by agency policies.
This course focuses on the interpretation and application of the Wilderness Act of 1964 through agency policy, and by applying sound wilderness management principles. The overarching mandate to preserve wilderness character is emphasized, as is the application of the Minimum Requirements Analysis process.
The Wilderness Stewardship for Practitioners Training is designed to examine fundamental principles of wilderness stewardship. Through this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand and apply the principles and requirements of the Wilderness Act
- Describe wilderness character and its qualities
- Explain the benefits and public value of wilderness preservation
- Apply the Minimum Requirements Analysis to a case study and compare the impact of possible actions on the preservation of wilderness character
- Analyze how specific resource or activity conditions influence decision-making in wilderness
- Locate helpful resources, experts, and colleagues to support future decision-making
The course requires completion of two online courses prior to attending, The Wilderness Act and either Writing a Minimum Requirements Analysis or Evaluating a Minimum Requirements Analysis.
