Hunting Camp Creek Wilderness

Introduction

The United States Congress designated the Hunting Camp Creek Wilderness (map of the Hunting Camp Creek Wilderness) in 2009 and it now has a total of See Hunting Camp Creek Wilderness breakdown of 8,471 acres.

All of this Wilderness is located in Virginia and is managed by the Forest Service.

Description

The valley of Hunting Camp Creek provides unusual opportunities for solitude and a wilderness experience. Hunting Camp Creek Wilderness stretches from ridge top to ridge top, and is traversed by approximately 7.5 miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (A.T., FT #1). Garden Mountain forms the northwestern edge of this secluded area; VA Routes 623, 615 and 610 complete the boundary. The area exhibits the typical peculiarities of Ridge and Valley geology, with older Silurian sandstone forming the tops of the mountains and younger Devonian shales appearing in the valleys. The slopes are steep to very steep. The vegetation is characteristic of eastern deciduous forest. There are extensive stands of rhododendron along the creeks and on the ridges. Wild flowers abound and bird life is rich.

Hunting Camp Creek Wilderness is located in Bland County in southwest Virginia. It is managed by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Eastern Divide Ranger District of the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
