Wilderness Skills Institute

The Wilderness Skills Institute is a training partnership between the Forest Service and local wilderness stewardship non-profit organizations. The Institute is typically hosted as a multi-day training in crosscut saw and other traditional tool use, horsemanship, trail maintenance, field leadership and first aid hosted annually in the spring both at the Powell Ranger District in Idaho and at the Cradle of Forestry facility outside of Brevard, North Carolina.

Ninemile Wildlands Training Center

Located at the historic Ninemile Ranger Station on the Lolo National Forest in west central Montana, the Ninemile Wildlands Training Center classes cover all different types of traditional skills: care and handling of traditional tools, horsemanship and packing, historic building preservation and maintenance, and low impact backcountry stock use.
